LORD Ramsay Dalgety settled well into high society in Tonga, the archipelago that became known as the Friendly Islands because of the reception accorded to Captain James Cook on arrival in 1773.

Lord Dalgety, a former Con-servative councillor on Edin-burgh District Council, moved to Tonga in 1991, when he was Ramsay Robertson Dalgety, QC.

By 2008, King George Tupou V made him a law lord and privy counsellor with the title Lord Dalgety of Sikotilani Tonga – Lord Dalgety of Scotland.

He held a number of powerful and well-paid posts in Tonga, enjoying public life there as he did here. He was traffic com-missioner for Scotland and deputy chairman with Edin-burgh Hibernian Shareholders’ Association, while in Tonga he has been vice-president Tonga International Game Fishing Association and has been chair of the Tonga Electric Power Board.
