A MOTHER has told how her rape-victim daughter committed suicide after years of living in fear of her attacker being released.
Chelsea Rorison left a note for her devastated mother Wendy Neil saying: “I’m sorry, but I’ve told you I’m doing it. He’s won.”
The 18-year-old, who was raped by 64-year-old Joseph McCann at the age of 12, hanged herself in a park near her home in Troon, Ayrshire, on August 22.
Ms Neil claimed that her daughter had struggled to come to terms with the attack. She said: “That beast ruined her life. She was never the same after what he put her through.
“She would have nightmares and wake up screaming, ‘He’s coming to get me, they’ve let him out.’ I used to hear her at 3am and it would break my heart.
“She saw a psychiatrist and told people she was fine, but she was severely depressed and in the end it was just too much.”
Ms Neil has now been told that McCann, who was sentenced to 10 years in jail in 2007, will be released on parole on December 22.
The 48-year-old added: “McCann’s taken away my wee lassie’s life and all he’s done is a few stinking years in jail. That’s not justice.”
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
