the remarkable loyalty of Greyfriars Bobby, the little dog that never left its master's side, has been celebrated in a memorial service at Greyfriars Kirk, Edinburgh.

On the 141st anniversary of the cairn terrier's death, Primary 3 pupil Alastair Sherriff, of George Heriot's School, was among those who took part – along with rescue dog Ruby.

Greyfriars Bobby became famous worldwide after moving into the churchyard and guarding his owner's grave after John Gray died in 1858. At yesterday's ceremony, attended by Lord Provost Donald Wilson, a wreath was laid at the headstone by pupils, while piper Jennifer Hutcheon played a specially written tribute.
