SCOTTISH seafood restaurant the Mussel Inn has run out of mussels.

The restaurant, which has eateries in Glasgow and Edinburgh, has seen a sharp drop in custom as it has had to take the delicacy off the menu due to a shellfish toxin scare in Shetland.

The heatwave is believed to have caused a rise in naturally occurring toxic algae off the islands, which causes diarrhetic shellfish poisoning (DSP) when eaten.

Shetland Islands Council has had to close 13 of the islands' mussel production areas due to the "incredibly high" toxins levels, and a voluntary ban has been imposed on the remaining seven harvesting areas.

Production from the mussel beds throughout the islands may be banned for at least another two weeks.

Claire Campbell, manager at the Mussel Inn in Glasgow, said: "It's natural toxins so it's no one's fault but it's really frustrating.

"People come here for mussels, because it's the Mussel Inn. It's embarrassing when we have to tell them we don't have any mussels – we keep saying we're going to have to change the name."
