A group of crofters is arguing that Scottish independence will help their livelihood flourish.

The eight-member group says crofters will have a stronger voice in Europe by cutting out Westminster.

It is the latest group to launch under the Yes Scotland banner, following Farming for Yes last week.

Skye crofter Anne Blackford said: "Crofting, which is very much based on sustainability, can only be strengthened when we have independence, when our interests will be fully represented in Edinburgh and importantly in Brussels where so many key decisions affecting our financial sustainability will be taken."

Her comments were made before the launch of Crofters for Yes at the Black Isle Show yesterday.

Last week Rural Affairs Secretary Richard Lochhead appealed to farmers on behalf of the Yes camp.

Launching Farming for Yes, a sub-group of the Yes Scotland campaign, he said independence would deliver greater financial support for Scottish agriculture, including through the Common Agricultural Policy.
