AN elderly former teacher is expected to face a third trial over the death of a Scots woman in Australia more than 20 years ago, after a jury failed to reach a verdict.

Ronald Pennington, 84, had been on trial at the Supreme Court in Perth, Western Australia, for the alleged manslaughter of Cariad Anderson-Slater, whose remains were found in his former backyard in February 2011.

Mr Pennington had moved to Tasmania, but was extradited back to Australia to face the charges.

Cariad, of Elgin, Morayshire, was 42 when she went missing on July 13, 1992, two years after moving to Australia.
