Firefighters tackled a blaze which tore through a city centre building.

The fire is believed to have started in Diablero, a takeaway in Pitt Street, Glasgow, and appeared to spread to the flats above.

Emergency services raced to the scene at around 5.30pm and the part of the street, between Sauchiehall Street and Bath Street, was cordoned off.

Fire teams were at the site extinguishing the blaze, while smoke billowed from the upstairs windows of the building.

Neil Douglas, a chef from the neighbouring restaurant Antipasti, said staff and customers were evacuated when the alarm was raised.

He said: "We noticed smoke outside and then the fire service asked us to leave the restaurant.

"We have no idea when we'll get back in but I doubt it will be tonight.

"There were about 20 people in the restaurant at the time."

A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said: "We received the call at 5.28pm."
