Nicole Kidman has responded to the damning reviews of her Grace Kelly biopic by saying she had no control over any of it - and said she has yet to give a "great performance".

Grace Of Monaco, in which she stars as the American actress and Tim Roth as her husband Prince Rainier, was almost universally slammed by the critics after it opened the Cannes Film Festival.

People have reportedly been laughing at supposedly serious moments, and the all-star cast were compared to actors in a low-budget television movie.

Asked for her reaction to the film's reviews, Kidman said: "As much as people go, 'Oh the actor is totally responsible', the actor doesn't go into the editing room.

"I wasn't producing the film. I wasn't directing it and I don't have control.

"You literally do the performance and then you leave and you are told, 'Ok, come here to help promote the movie.' That's what I did."
