SHOPLIFTER Jean McGovern has been kicked out of her home in a successful move by prosecutors to take property funded by the proceeds of crime.
McGovern, part of a high-profile shoplifting gang led by crime queen Annette Daniel, lodged a last-ditch legal bid to stop her and her daughter being evicted from her Glasgow home. But it has now been rejected by one of Scotland's top judges.
Court officers were given a warrant to "summarily eject" the McGovern family from their house on Foresthall Drive, Springburn, in the north of Glasgow. It is understood McGovern has now been evicted and the property will soon be on the market.
McGovern, 47, struck a deal with prosecutors to hand over 80 per cent of her home under the Proceeds of Crime Act in May, but changed her mind weeks later, claiming she had been at an "unfair advantage" when she signed the deal in jail.
McGovern had been visited in custody by a legal representative who told her accepting the prosecutors' deal was the "best thing she could do" or she would lose the house. But on June 30 she wrote to the Crown Office saying she wanted her case dealt with in court. Her solicitor said as a prisoner she had been "vulnerable" when she signed the agreement.
Judge Lord Carloway rejected McGovern's attempt to have the eviction order overturned in the Court of Session. McGovern and her family were due to be evicted from the property on July 22.
