PARENTS campaigning for access to free childcare promised to them under a flagship Scottish Government initiative have taken their fight to the country's new First Minister.

Nicola Sturgeon has promised to meet campaigners after they raised the issue with her during an online question and answer session.

Under SNP legislation, families are entitled to 600 hours of funded early learning and childcare for three and four-year-olds.

However, parents in Glasgow say there are not enough suitable places in the city, with only a third of council-run nurseries offering wrap-around care. The campaign group Fair Funding For Our Kids has already lodged a protest petition with Glasgow City Council.

Ms Sturgeon told the SNP conference: "By the end of the next parliament, my commitment is that all three and four-year-olds and all eligible two-year-olds will receive, not 16 hours, but 30 hours of free childcare each week."

During the chat with parents on Facebook, Ms Sturgeon said: "You raise a fair point. Get in touch with my office and I am sure we can sort a time to discuss."

Parent Jenny Gorevan, said: "In Glasgow alone we estimate that up to 2,000 children are not getting the funding they have been promised.

"It is great the First Minister wants to meet us and we're looking forward to telling her how we think she can sort this problem out."
