SINGER Jimmy Somerville, known for his work with Bronski Beat and The Communards, is to perform at the Scottish Music Awards in Glasgow this weekend.

He will take to the stage at the annual awards, which will be at the Old Fruitmarket venue tomorrow.

Somerville has been nominated for one of the nine awards on offer, also know as the Tartan Clef awards, which are being held in support of charity Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy in Scotland.

Other acts performing will be Fatherson, Idlewild, Julie Fowlis, Neon Jungle, Nicholas McDonald, Prides and The LaFontaines.

Last year's winners included Twin Atlantic and Admiral Fallow.

Nordoff Robbins Scotland works with more than 400 people affected by disability, trauma or illness every week. The charity needs £600,000 each year to operate.

It is named after co-creators, Clive Robbins, a teacher, and Paul Nordoff, a composer, who teamed up in 1959.

Speaking about the work of the charity, Somerville said: "Music truly has the power to heal."
