DIDN’T they look cool even then? This is the Rolling Stones opening McCormack’s music store in Bath Street, Glasgow, in October 1963.

Such a recognisable left to right - Bill Wyman, Keith Richards, Mick Jagger, drummer Charlie Watts and Brian Jones. Not being morbid I hope, but a little surprising that despite their rock’n’roll lifestyle four of the five are still alive today, apart from poor Brian there.

The Stones were on their first major British tour and were playing two houses at the Odeon Cinema, which was the leading venue for touring bands and singers then.

McCormack’s, which sold sheet music and musical instruments, had just moved to Bath Street from Cowcaddens, so arranged for the Stones to come along for the official opening.

Such was the crush of fans that they had to close the doors when the lads were there.

Alas McCormack’s, founded by musician Neil McCormack, had to close five years ago, a victim of folk buying instruments over the internet. As one old customer observed: “Bought a £7 guitar there for £1 deposit and five bob a week. It was three years before I learned to play a chord on it.”

As for the Stones, they have just released their 25th studio album.
