SCOTS entertainer John Barrowman has had emergency surgery in the US after suffering appendicitis.
The actor and presenter fell ill at his home earlier this week and doctors told him his appendix would have to be removed immediately.
The Dr Who and Torchwood star was taken to the Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, California, after collapsing in “agony”.
He has been posting regular video updates of his stay in hospital where he has been visited by his sister and his parents.
After undergoing surgery, Barrowman, 50, said: “I was woken at 6am and whisked right into surgery. I feel like I have been hit by a car.
“I’m just sore all over and my voice is sore because of the tube going down my throat. The staff in the surgery knew who I was. They were fans which was kind of funny.
“I was just lucky my appendix didn’t burst. They caught it in time. I was in agony yesterday. I knew something was up. I felt really bad.”
He added: “In the surgery they made three incisions on my belly and then did it by laser.
“I now have three holes in me. I’m just glad it went well and hopefully I should get home soon.”
Barrowman was hooked up to intravenous drips following the operation and says he is on pain-relief drugs. His accent also switches between American when talking to the camera and broad Scottish when speaking to parents John and Marion.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
