A TIGER has been put down at Edinburgh Zoo after suffering from health problems.

Edinburgh Zoo has confirmed that the popular 15-year-old Sumatran tiger Baginda has died.

The critically endangered tiger was suffering health-related issues which are typically found in animals of her age.

Royal Zoological Society Scotland Edinburgh Zoo said: “Everyone at the zoo has been saddened by the loss of our Sumatran tiger Baginda.

“A firm favourite with our staff, members and visitors, Baginda was almost 15 years old.

“The quality of life and wellbeing of our animals is always our priority and the veterinary advice was that Baginda should be put to sleep to ensure she did not suffer.”

The Sumatran tiger is regarded as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List and is the smallest subspecies of tiger.

Baginda was one of just two Sumatran tigers at the zoo.

She was born at Dortmund Zoo and was said to have a “feisty” personality.

The remaining tiger at the zoo is a male called Jambi, aged 14.
