Storm Callum has hit Scotland, bringing travel chaos as strong winds and heavy rain batter the country.

Rest and Be Thankful will remain closed over the weekend after the latest bout of bad weather caused fresh landslips on the notorious A83.

Bad weather sparked multiple landslips earlier in the week, leaving 300 tonnes of debris hanging over the Argyll and Bute road.

Motorists will remain forced to take a 60-mile detour while the road remains sealed off.

Yellow Met Office warnings for rain and wind came into effect across the country earlier today, expecting to last over the weekend.

Areas including the Highlands, the Hebrides and Argyll are expected to experience the highest gusts, with winds tipped to reach up to 80mph.

SP Energy Networks issued advice on power cuts and forecasters said transport disruption was likely.

Meanwhile Network Rail is anticipating significant rainfall on Saturday and said it would be monitoring known flood risk areas, with rapid response teams on stand by.

On Friday afternoon SEPA had two flood warnings and ten flood alerts in place.

CalMac Ferries warned passengers to check before travelling after cancelling several services, including Oban to Caslebay and Mallaig to Armadale.

While trains were largely unaffected on Friday, the coastal route between Kilwinning and Largs/Ardrossan was suspended due to waves crashing over the sea wall.

Met Office meteorologist Aidan McGivern said: "The wind gusts will approach 40-50mph across western parts of Scotland, Wales, western England and Northern Ireland.

"Accompanying high tides will be big waves and we could see coastal impacts from those and inland impacts from those strong winds as well.

"Later in the day as the deep low approaches north-west Scotland there is the risk of 70mph gusts for exposed parts.

"The rain is also of concern with a lot of it to come through 36 hours over Friday and Saturday, especially for western parts of England, south west Scotland and Wales."
