The Times reported that the number of people failing to pay the fee in Scotland rose sharply since 2014 with the overall “evasion rate” in the UK rising from five per cent to seven per cent last year.

In total, 1.9 million households are thought to be avoiding paying the fee.

While there is no indication for why the fee is avoided in Scotland, there has been criticism for the BBC over political coverage and claims that not enough Scottish content is shown.

The Scottish Government has repeatedly called for more money raised in Scotland to be spent in the country.
