Social media users were left without access to Facebook and Instagram yesterday in what is being described as the most severe outage in its history.

Facebook's main product, its two messaging apps and image-sharing site Instagram were all affected.

Both sites displayed error messages when users attempt to access certain areas.

It reads: "Oops... Something went wrong. We're working on getting it fixed as soon as we can."

According to Down Detector, users in America and Europe also experienced difficulty with issues beginning at 4pm GMT.

Facebook appeared to be back up on Thursday morning with Instagram also announcing it was back. 

"We're aware that some people are currently having trouble accessing the Facebook family of apps," Facebook said in a statement.

"We're working to resolve the issue as soon as possible."
