Todays pet-loving culture has opened many new opportunities to treat, pamper, showcase, and involve our creature companions. Here we list some businesses on hand to help you show beloved pets how much they mean to you…

The Dog Lover Show 2019

The Dog Lover Show is back at the SEC on 7th & 8th September, bigger and better with more dogs, more performances and more exhibitors.

Whether you own a dog, plan to rescue or adopt or just love dogs, The Dog Lover Show is going to be your perfect day out. Meet even more dogs this year with more Breed Clubs attending and visit the shows Vets, Grooming and Training features where experts can offer help and advice.

Expect a fun day out for the little ones too as Monty Dogge returns to the Storytelling stage, free face painting and for young vets there will be an interactive children’s vet feature. The main stage has non-stop action with audience participation and plenty to entertain big and little kids alike.

Meet Golden Retrievers to Great Danes, Lhasa Apso to Labradors, from Keeshonds to Braque Du Bourbonnais, common to rare and even some endangered breeds.

On the main stage Scotland’s fastest flyball team returns, as do Mordor Gun Dogs display, and watch stunts, agility and performances from some of the most talented dogs in the UK.

There are still more exciting performances and features to be announced plus Still Games ‘Mark Cox’ is compere for the weekend, adding some humour to what is already an action packed, fun filled day out for all the family.

Kids up to 6yrs are admitted free and Early Bird Tickets are available for a limited time at £10 for Adults and £5 Children.

Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home

Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home is offering free information sessions to groups, clubs and organisations throughout Edinburgh and the Lothians.

This follows the Home’s launch of a new education programme earlier in 2019, made possible by a grant awarded to the Home by The Kennel Club Educational Trust, and supported by a further grant from RS Macdonald Charitable Trust. Workshops have been in high demand and extremely well received by schools since its launch, with every teacher surveyed citing an increased understanding of the work of the Home and responsible pet ownership.

The Home is now offering adapted workshops to community organisations, from sports clubs to rotary groups, to share more about the work of Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home and its 136-year history. Workshops can also be tailored to address individual topics on request.

Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home’s Education Officer, Daniel Tipping, said:

“It’s been brilliant to speak to so many young people this year, but I’m looking forward to sharing more with others in the community, too. Despite having been at our Seafield site for over 60 years, I’m constantly hearing people say that they’ve always wondered about what goes on behind the scenes. This is a great way for others to learn more about our work and our history, as well as responsible pet ownership”.

Workshops can be held at a location of your choosing, or at Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home’s rehoming centre in Seafield. To arrange a booking or for further information, email Daniel at

The Veterinary Centre

Since opening its doors for the first time in 1945, The Veterinary Centre is one of the oldest practices in the Glasgow area and has long had a reputation for excellent veterinary care.

In recent years, the focus has been modernisation, with clients witnessing radical changes to the reception area and consulting rooms, which are now clean and clinical. There is also an in-house laboratory so clients no longer have to wait for blood results, as well as fully equipped theatre with modern x-ray equipment, ultrasound scanner and dental machine.

Along with the day-to-day consultations and surgical work, clinics have been developed in acupuncture, senior pet health and puppy training. A puppy and kitten package was launched, which at £49 for vaccinations, parasite treatment, microchipping and a free bag of food, saves clients over £150.

This was followed by a Pet Health Club, which for a small monthly fee, clients save money for treatments not covered by pet insurance (e.g. vaccinations and parasite prevention), as well as offering discounts on lifetime medications, food, pet accessories and procedures (e.g. neutering and dental treatments).

A fresh and modern website offers online prescription ordering, registration and shopping services. There is a strong social media following and clients enjoy text or email reminders when vaccinations, appointments and treatments are due.

The team are devout animal lovers with a wealth of experience and knowledge to treat a variety of small animals including dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs - even the occasional lizard or bird. Dynamic, invested and committed to training, clinics are being developed in animal behaviour, physiotherapy and small animal spa days. It is practice policy that every animal being cared for is treated as their own.
