The Jeremy Vine show has faced a backlash after comments made by panellists about Scottish independence.

Comments made about the prospect of Scotland becoming independent made on the show have been branded as 'patronising' and disrespectful towards Scotland.

The panel was discussing Boris Johnson running for Prime Minister after a poll suggested that it would result in a surge in support for Scottish independence. Paul Burrell, Princess Diana’s former butler, who appeared on the show says the report on a surge in Scottish independence if Boris became PM is “food” for Nicola Sturgeon

He added: “I think that the United Kingdom is stronger together than they are apart.

“I mean, for goodness sake, Scotland, by itself? How’s it going survive? It has …what does it have?... oil, and a monster in a lake, and... whisky.”

Following his comments, glamour model Nicola McLean, who was also on the Vine show panel, added "Irn-Bru" into the list of things Scotland has on its own.

The comments were lambasted by viewers with some stating that the 'narrow-minded comments' were an advert for Scottish independence.

Paul Muir wrote: "What a fantastic advert for independence that was. It shows you the breathtaking ignorance that those south of the border has when it comes to Scotland. It's that ignorance that will see the break-up of this dysfunctional union."

Others found the comments "funny" with John Richards writing: "First Jeremy Hunt and now Paul Burrell trolling the Scottish Nationalists. Brilliant work"
