Scotland is set to be battered by heavy downpours later this week as the nation prepares for a weekend of music and sporting events.

Two separate yellow "severe" warnings for thunderstorms have been issued by the Met Office, one of which will come into force from midday on Wednesday, 10 July until 9pm.

The first warning covers eastern parts of the country, including Central, Tayside and Fife, Grampian and SW Scotland and Lothian Borders.

The second alert will come into force on Thursday 11 July at midday and will remain in place until 9pm, covering the above regions as well as Strathclyde and Highlands and Eilean Siar.

As much as 40-50 mm of rain is expected to fall in 2-3 hours, increasing the chance of localised flooding and travel disruption.

Despite the heavy showers, temperatures will remain mild, with a high of 19C in Glasgow, 20C in Edinburgh and 17C in Aberdeen.

A Met Office spokesperson said: "Heavy showers and thunderstorms are likely to develop during Thursday afternoon across parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England.

"Whilst many areas will miss the heaviest rain, where heavy showers and thunderstorms do develop they will be slow-moving bringing the potential for 20-30 mm of rain in an hour and 40-50 mm in 2-3 hours. Showers and thunderstorms will gradually die out during Thursday evening."

The weather warning comes days before the Scottish Open gets underway at The Renaissance Club in North Berwick as well as TRNSMT Festival at Glasgow Green.
