Democratic presidential hopeful Beto O’Rourke has told Donald Trump he is not welcome in El Paso.

The local-born and raised politician told The El Paso Times, a sister paper of The Herald that the US president “has no place here,” and that he “should not be in El Paso.”

Mr O'Rourke said of Mr Trump: "He's helped to create what we saw in El Paso on Saturday. He's helped to produce the suffering that we are experiencing right now. This community needs to heal."

The president is expected to visit the sites of the shootings later this week, according to USA Today, another of The Herald's American sister papers.

The remark came after Trump gave a statement about the shootings in El Paso and Dayton, Ohio where he condemned white nationalism.

"In one voice, our nation must condemn racism, bigotry and white supremacy. These sinister ideologies must be defeated," Trump said. "Hate has no place in America.”

Mr O'Rourke said the words are "meaningless against everything that he says up to this point."

"He literally launched his campaign for the presidency -- the greatest position of public trust and power in the world -- by trying to instill fear about immigrants," he said.
