Scottish scientists are set to work with South American farmers to help reduce the carbon footprint of a country with one of the highest levels of beef consumption in the world.
Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC) has signed a memorandum of understanding with the National Agricultural Technology Institute (INTA) of Argentina, a country in which more than 100lbs of beef per capita is eaten every year. This compares to 24lbs of beef in the UK.
The MoU will see SRUC scientists share information on sustainable management practices as well as technological innovations in food production.
Dr Guillermo Sanchez, manager of institutional relations at INTA, said: “We are delighted to sign this memorandum of understanding with SRUC.”
Market round-up
Harrison & Hetherington Ltd sold 51 clean cattle, 26 cast cows, 1761 prime lambs and 761 cast sheep at St Boswells yesterday.
Twenty prime bullocks sold to 268p/kg and averaged 246p (+14p), while 31 prime heifers peaked at 268p to average 240p (n/c).
In the cast ring cows peaked at £1716 and 213p to average 174p (+8p).
The large show of prime lambs sold to £140 and 312p/kg for Beltex to average £106 or 248p overall (-15p).
Heavy cast sheep sold to a top of £147 for Bluefaced Leicester ewes to average £119 (-£12), while light ewes peaked at £113 for North Country Cheviots to average £79 (-£10).
The firm also sold 11 prime heifers at Carlisle yesterday which peaked at 274p/kg to average 250p (+19p), while 16 beef-bred bullocks sold to 252p and levelled at 226p (-2p).
Thirty-six, beef-bred young bulls peaked at 242p and averaged 204p (+8p), while 21 dairy-bred, young bulls sold to 196p and levelled at 177p (+10p).
In the rough ring 100 cast beef cows peaked at 263p to average 171p (+15p), while 152 cast dairy cows sold to 196p to average 132p (+5p).
There were also 1935 prime lambs that peaked at £153 or 317p/kg to average 258p (-2p).
Lowland cast ewes (426) peaked at £148 for Texels to average £85 (-£26), while 117 hill ewes sold to £82 for a Hill Cheviot to average £39 (-£22).
Messrs Craig Wilson Ltd sold 2128 prime lambs and 680 cast sheep at Ayr yesterday.
Prime lambs were easy to sell with the whole sale averaging 254p/kg or £107 per head. The top prices at the sale were £138 for a single Texel and 291p/kg for a pair of Beltex.
Cast sheep peaked at £200 for Texels with other pens of Texels not far behind that figure. Suffolk and Beltex ewes peaked at £142, while Mules sold to £113 and Blackfaces to £100.
