IT aimed to showcase Glasgow's "world-famous warm welcome" and sustainable city credentials to delegates arriving for the UN Climate Change Conference from every corner of the globe.

Businesses were being encouraged to mark the milestone 12-day event, which gets underway in just over two weeks, by decorating buildings with specially designed COP26 branded bunting.

However, the packages, which have been distributed to 155 firms across the city, appeared to be slightly out of step with the ethos of the event.

While the indoor and outdoor bunting is made from eco-friendly materials, the decorations were delivered to businesses in plastic bags.

A COP26 official admitted it "wasn't our intention" to use the bags and was encouraging firms to take them to larger supermarkets to be recycled.

Letters accompanying the packages encourage businesses to help raise Glasgow's profile as a sustainable city.

Marketing officials write:  "To show your support for the COP26 summit, we have created an environmentally friendly branding pack for you to dress your premises.

"We would be pleased if you could put this up at your earliest convenience."

A spokesman for Get Ready Glasgow said, “Bunting has been delivered to 155 local firms as part of the preparations for COP26.

"It was delivered in plastic bags. This wasn’t our intention but the bags can be recycled at larger supermarkets, along with carrier bags.”

A spokesperson for the Scottish Greens said: “COP26 is an opportunity for all public organisations and agencies to examine their sustainability practices, including the use of unnecessary plastics, so this reflection is welcome.”
