Fire crews have battled through the night to contain a huge blaze which broke out in a derelict building in Glasgow’s east end.

Six fire engines were sent to deal with the fire which tore through the abandoned Elba Lane nursery in St Michael’s court, near Parkhead, just before 10pm.

Two crews remain at the scene this morning. At the height of the blaze, huge flames and smoke could be seen shooting skyward from the roof of the building.

Eyewitness footage shows the night sky lit up by the blaze, which appears to have gutted the nursery school.

The nursery sits right next to St Michael's Primary School, which appears to have been unaffected by the fire.

Glasgow City Council voted to close Elba Lane in 2015 and replace it with a new nursery in Dalmarnock.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We were alerted at 9.55pm on Tuesday, 3 October to reports of a fire affecting a derelict building at St Michael's Lane, Glasgow.

"At its height, Operations Control mobilised six appliances and a high reach vehicle to the scene, where two appliances remain in attendance on Wednesday, 4 October.

"There are no reported casualties."

There were still two appliances at the scene at 6.30am this morning.

Police advised people in nearby streets to keep their windows closed due to the smoke.
