A landmark hotel in a Scottish village has been sold.

A businessman with seven other hotels across the country has acquired the “eye-catching” Tudor-style hotel.

Graham + Sibbald said the Popinjay Hotel in Rosebank, South Lanarkshire, was sold following a private and confidential marketing process.

The 34-bedroom hotel has a range of bar, lounge, restaurant, and function facilities.

Thomas Melville, group chief executive, said: “We plan to create two brand new restaurants, new bar area and lounge and put the hotel back to being the hub of the community. The gym will open, as soon as possible, and the pool we hope to open thereafter.”

Melville Group also includes the Garth Hotel in Grantown-on-Spey, Grey Gull Hotel at Loch Fyne, and the MacDonald Hotel in Kinlochleven.

Alistair Letham, a hotel consultant with Graham + Sibbald, said: “The Popinjay Hotel has been a landmark hotel property in the Clyde valley for many years and this new chapter within the Melville Hotels Group will ensure perennial popularity of the hotel to visitors and locals alike.”

The agent said: “The hotel’s range of facilities can cater for meetings and conferences, weddings, and events plus the garden is ideal for wedding ceremonies and other al-fresco activities.

“The hotel is a great base for guests looking to explore the wonderful, rural countryside South Lanarkshire has to offer whilst being readily accessible to a major city, Glasgow, via the M74. Externally, alongside the hotel, there is land extending to over 1.3 acres which could offer further development potential.”

The purchase price was not disclosed.
