Heavy rain will deluge the North East of Scotland today, leading authorities to issue flood alerts for Dundee and Angus, Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, and the Moray Coast.
The Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) issued the caution this morning, stating that ‘intense rainfall’ on Wednesday afternoon and evening could “cause significant flooding impacts”.
Between 15 and 30mm of rain is expected to fall, which may lead to travel disruption and unsafe conditions.
The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for the area between noon and 9 PM, stating: “There is a slight chance of power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses.
“There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings. Where flooding occurs, there is a slight chance of delays or cancellations to train and bus services. Spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.
“There is a small chance that some communities will become cut off by flooded roads.”
The town of Brechin, in Angus, was hit by severe flooding as a result of Storm Babet in October 2023.
Heavy rainfall and high winds led to the evacuation of more than 400 homes in the area. Two people tragically lost their lives.
According to SEPA, 1 in 22 homes in Scotland are at risk of flooding.
A flood safety guide from the organisation states: “Always put your safety first and don’t take unnecessary risks, call emergency services if you are concerned about your own safety or the safety of others and act immediately on any advice provided.
“Avoid contact with flood water as it may be contaminated with sewage and other pollutants. Do not walk, drive or swim through floodwater – there may be hazards below the surface you cannot see. Don’t walk on sea defences, riverbanks or bridges, and stay away from power lines and electrical wires.2
