Work to repair a damaged subsea cable is underway after Storm Amy cut off internet access to the Isle of Tiree.

Residents on the Scottish island have been left without broadband since the storm rolled in last weekend.

“Following widespread power outages across the Hebrides, caused by Storm Amy, we've identified some damage to our subsea cable between Tiree and Tobermory,” a spokesperson for the company said.

“This became apparent once power was restored and means homes on Tiree are currently without broadband.

"We appreciate the patience and understanding of everyone affected."

Engineers are arriving on the island on Thursday morning to begin repairs. A temporary connection will be set up while a permanent solution is plotted.

Storm Amy brought strong winds and heavy rain to the region, with gusts of 96 MPH recorded on the island.

Repairs are also being carried out to restore internet access to part of Shetland after a cable was damaged during the storm on Friday.

Openreach said that most customers had access to service and phone connections were 'up and running'.

The cable connects Shetland, Orkney, and the Faroe Islands to mainland Scotland.

Repairs are expected to take more than a week.

Speaking on BBC Scotland's Around Orkney, Faroese Telecom managing director Páll Vesturbú he was not sure how long repairs would take.

He said: "We have contacted the company that does the repair for us so they are preparing. Since it's so close to the shore [there] needs to be some extra work, some extra preparation to make sure that everything is ready when the vessel arrives," he said.

"So that has stayed off the repair just now. I hope it can be no more than a week but it's a bit difficult to say."
