Beginners from across the Scotch Whisky industry stepped onto the ice for the first time at the inaugural Whisky On Ice tournament; a fun, beginner-focussed curling event combining coaching, networking and friendly competition to encourage more people in Scotland to give the sport a go.

Bringing together 16 industry teams (64 participants) the day began with expert-led introductory coaching sessions designed specifically for newcomers to the sport, before building into an afternoon tournament that saw participants put their new skills into action in a spirited competition atmosphere.

Designed to revive the historic connection between Scotland’s whisky communities and curling, the event captured the energy of the Olympic moment with an accessible entry point to the sport.

Lauren Gray, Double Winter Olympian and organiser of Whisky On Ice, said: “The atmosphere on the ice was incredible from start to finish.

"Seeing people from across the whisky industry completely embrace the sport, was genuinely special.

"With the Winter Olympics inspiring so many people right now, it felt like the perfect moment to introduce a new audience to curling. The whisky industry is full of brilliant people who are always up for trying something new and having a good laugh, so I had a feeling they would really take to it. The energy and laughter on the ice all day really showed just how much everyone enjoyed the experience.

"I want to extend a huge thank you to the headline sponsors of the event; Whisky Auctioneer, Partners& and Croxsons Glass for making the event possible.

"I’d also like to say a huge thank you to the coaches for their support and enthusiasm throughout the day. They made everyone feel welcome and confident on the ice, which really helped first-time curlers relax, learn quickly and get the most out of the day.”

Gillian Macdonald, Master Blender and Head of Whisky Creation at The Glenmorangie Company said: “It’s been absolutely brilliant today, the camaraderie and fun have been the best parts. The coaching has been really structured, which means we’ve learnt so much. It’s been fabulous, I would definitely recommend trying curling and we will be back next year 100%.”

After an afternoon of friendly but competitive play, Team Suntory Global Spirits were crowned the inaugural Whisky On Ice Champions, lifting bespoke trophies which were specially created and supplied by Glencairn Crystal in support of the event.

Ryan McComarck, Skip of the winning team from Suntory Global Spirits, said:

“It was great to win, especially with such a tense finish going to a single draw shot to decide the winner against a competitor team. It’s been a great day to be a part of, so many people from across the industry coming together for what’s been a really, really fun event.

"We’ve had eight people from Suntory Global Spirits here today and every single one of them has absolutely loved it and is already bagsying a place for next year.”

Following the success of the inaugural event, organiser Lauren Gray hopes Whisky On Ice will become an annual fixture, and will inspire a new generation to discover a passion for curling.
