Greggs has opened its first drive-thru in Scotland - creating 16 new jobs.

The move comes four years after the bakery giant famous for its steak bakes and sausage rolls first opened a drive-thru in Manchester in 2017 off the back of a successful trial.

The new shop in Dalkeith is the first Greggs with drive-thru service to open in Scotland as the on-the-go retailer continues to expand its drive-thru portfolio.

But unlike others south of the Border - the Scottish drive-thru will not be 24 hours.

It will open from 5.30am to 7pm on Monday to Friday, 6.30am to 6pm on Saturdays and 6.30am to 5pm on Sundays.

The leading UK food-on-the-go retailer which has over 2,100 shops nationwide and serves over six million customers a week has said it is pushing ahead with plans to open more stores across Scotland and the rest of the UK despite warning of supply chain issues and pricing pressures.

The Newcastle-headquarterd firm is already planning its first drive-thru in Glasgow.

Glasgow City Council granted planning permission last year the new restaurant, which will be located next to Pizza Hut and Burger King at Great Western Retail Park in Drumchapel.

Plans for the drive-thru were originally submitted to Glasgow City Council back in April, 2020.

The 1800-square-foot restaurant was to be open seven days a week from 5am to midnight, with outside seating and a car park with space for 72 vehicles.

Roisin Currie, retail and people director for Greggs, said: “Our new shop in Dalkeith has brought 16 new jobs to the local area, as well as providing customers with a modern, convenient new place to experience their favourite Greggs food on-the-go.”

Greggs has increased its store estate by 68 branches since the start of the year, including new drive-thru locations, and said it expects to have expanded by around 100 outlets in 2021.

It has said it will accelerate its opening programme next year, with around 150 net openings planned as it pushes towards its long-term goal of 3,000 stores across the UK.

It also has ambitious plans to double its turnover to around £2.4 billion in the next five years, as it seeks to grow its delivery and evening operations further.

Shop manager Andy Ewing said: “We can’t wait to welcome both Greggs fans and new customers to our brand-new shop. We’ve got an amazing range of tasty bakes, hot drinks, sweet treats and savouries available for takeaway, click and collect or Just Eat delivery.”
