Have you got a dingy driveway that’s seen better ways? Whether it’s a part of your house and garden you forget to clean or you’ve been regularly keeping an eye on it, it can often feel like another big job on the to do list.
Driveway experts have shared how you can use a household essential to bring your block paving back up to scratch.
While washing powder is vital for fresh laundry, it can also result in a fresh driveway.
How to use washing powder to clean your paved driveway
According to Block Paving Retford, washing powder can be used on driveways and “does a great job at cleaning block paving”.
You can use it to remove “tough stains, dirt, and debris” thanks to the chemicals it contains which can “kill moss and algae that grow on paving” too.
However, it doesn't suit all paved driveways.
How to make washing powder solution to clean your driveway
The company shared that you should first remove any outdoor furniture and sweep the driveway to remove big bits of dirt.
Block Paving Retford said: “You should mix a little washing powder with warm water for a cleaning solution.
“Let this solution sit on the paving for 10 minutes. Then gently scrub it with a soft brush. Block paving looks much better after using this method.”
Make sure you test a small area of your driveway before proceeding with this cleaning method (Image: Getty) A soft-bristled brush is best and you’ll need “to gently scrub the paving in a diagonal way” but don’t “harm the jointing compound between the blocks.”
They added: “Finally, rinse the paving very well with clean water. This cleans off any remaining dirt and detergent. For very dirty areas, you might have to do this more than once.
“It’s also good to check the jointing compound and add more, if needed. This keeps your block paving strong and looking good.”
However, before starting to clean your driveway, the experts advise you to “test the solution on a hidden part of the paving” to make sure the paving isn’t harmed.
They warn: “Be careful with more sensitive natural stone pavers. The washing powder might damage them.

“It’s good for brick pavers and some others. But, you must be careful with natural stone paving slabs. They need a gentler cleaning method to stay undamaged.”
If you have brick pavers, they recommend using a washing powder solution.
A mild washing-up liquid and warm water solution will suit limestone slabs while you can use the washing powder solution with permeable paving but you must use it with caution.
