I refer to David Roche's suggestion that road-users – cyclists, walkers and runners – should be compelled to wear high- visibility clothing to avoid being hit by a motorist (Letters, August 8).

The premise underlying Mr Roche's letter is that motorists should not be expected to see anything other than motor vehicles. There is a problem with his suggestion: it does not matter if one is lit up like a Christmas tree when a driver fails to look. I have an alternative suggestion: drivers should pay attention to the road ahead and potential hazards, obey speed limits and stop signs and drive at a speed permitting their vehicles to be halted within the distance clear ahead. It is all in the Highway Code and the Road Traffic Acts.
