The image selected to illustrate your article on children and poverty was inappropriate (The poverty epidemic, News, March 9).

The image of a young girl, dirty - possibly bruised - skimpily dressed with underpants in view and unshod feet, is not typical of children in poverty in Scotland in 2014.

The study's view of the impact of the Coalition Government's cuts on Scottish families was sufficient to stir the reader. The image used misrepresented those in poverty, the very point made by the case study: "I wouldn't tell my mum that I had nothing for my sons to eat."

The image used here was perhaps typical of the many families experiencing poverty, ie children well cared for with no visible signs of the everyday sacrifices being made in order that they be clothed and fed.
