IF at first you don't succeed, try, try and try again.

That is an adage that rings true for most aspects of life, but is probably not the most sagacious advice when it comes to gambling. An exception may be made, however, when it comes to a harmless small flutter on the British sporting institution that is the Grand National, particularly so in the case of 103-year-old George Atkinson.

Believed to be Britain's oldest punter, he has had a bet on the National every year for more than four decades, but has never managed to pick the winner, so it is apt that this year he is pinning his hopes on Long Run. There is no word on whether he was tempted to offer up a small prayer in the direction of Our Father.

The race, of course, has not been without its critics, but a review of safety has improved matters, and last year there were no injuries to the horses or the jockeys. It is to be hoped Lady Luck has a clear ride again tomorrow.

Readers wishing to have their own small stake in the outcome of tomorrow's race can make use of the handy sweepstake kit in today's sports section. After all, when it comes to the National, pot luck can often be as efficacious as a perusal of the form book. Just don't tell Mr Atkinson.
