IN Kenny MacAskill's absorbing if somewhat controversial (“We too should celebrate the centenary of Easter Rising”, The Herald, February 24), I would challenge his choice of Sir Sean Connery as being "the greatest living Scotsman ". Surely the once-popular former James Bond screen actor is considerably outranked by the likes of Sir Tom Hunter, Sir Ian Wood, Sir Tom Farmer and Jim McColl. Without exception all have gained distinction not only by their accumulation of wealth but by their philanthrophic disposal of same to countless good causes.

Quite apart from these gentlemen there are many more in the varying fields of medicine, research and academia who would be deserving of “the greatest living Scot” ahead of the self-exiled non-resident Scottish veteran.
