IS it not ironic that the same trade unions who argued for and agreed discriminatory wage agreements are now striking about the effect of those agreements ("Unison members vote to go on strike in long-running equal pay fight", The Herald, September 19)?

The unions involved made sure that "bin men" got substantially more benefit than “cleaning and dinner ladies” (sic). That was effected by granting bonuses to male workers which were denied to women. Now legislation has caught up with this egregious discrimination the women have rightly been awarded compensation.

The effect of that is that councils face an "unprecedented" challenge and consequently council tax payers have to foot large unexpected bills. Perhaps Unison and the GMB would care to contribute to the settlement of those bills.
