STUART Mitchell (Letters, October 6) mentions an archaic use of “and” to introduce “a mystical, inexplicable truth” as in “And did those feet in ancient time” (Blake). The word is still used today by broadcasters to introduce results in the mystical world of sport. For example, they say things like: "Football. And Stirling Bravehearts beat Old Edwardians 3-0 at Stirling Bridge.” Nothing wrong with that. Except sometimes they omit “Football” and say “Sport. And …”. Then I am left mystified.
