ONE must wonder about the credentials of those who so vigorously support a ban on smacking. For example, do they actually have children themselves? What steps would they take against one of their children if that child did something wrong?

Just to take one example, suppose that a child has stolen money from the parent. What would they do? They could "ground" the child for a period of time but that could have as bad a psychological effect on the child as a smack in the appropriate place. Or they could withhold pocket money, which might just steer the child towards shoplifting for the sweets they desire.

A quick smacking would be easier on the parent and child in the long run.
