WE have just returned from a very successful holiday in New Zealand. Everywhere we went there were information offices (i Site) staffed by friendly and knowledgeable staff able to advise us about walks, weather conditions and any local hazards. In many places there was also an office or desk run by the Department of Conservation (their equivalent of Scottish Natural Heritage). We found this advice extremely helpful adding an invaluable human touch to the information we were able to obtain from the internet.

Compare this with the situation now in Scotland where most of the VisitScotland offices have been closed and the few that remain have been significantly reduced in size. We find it extraordinary that this ill-conceived and short-sighted change has received relatively little public comment and has not been challenged more vociferously in Parliament and the media.
