I AM possibly fortunate to still have my old ration book details so may be earlier on in the queue than most when Armageddon starts. My only worry is in relation to what we will be given ration-wise, as I have really got into cooking and baking in a big way, particularly with my favourite delicacy, doughnuts. Having researched a little I could find details of only one Second World War cook, Marguerite Patten, but had been unable to get details of a wartime recipe for my treat.

My hopes were raised, however, when I read about the American Donut Dollies, pistol-wielding galls who were over here dishing out doughnuts to the troops to keep their spirits up so I will dig further to find their recipe. I only hope that they turn out to look as good as Fanny Craddock's.
