ON reading Johnston McKay’s obituary of Rev David Munro, a much-respected minister (The Herald, February 6), it occurs to me that his final paragraph provides an ideal summary of the qualities required in the ministry today: “...a fine preacher, pastorally attentive, willingly undertaking what was asked of him by the wider Church, and taking his full part in the courts of the Church.”

I READ your obituary of Viscount Slim (The Herald, February 4) which portrayed a truly remarkable man with an outstanding and impressive record of service and achievement.

This culminated in his appointment to the rank of Honorary Colonel on completion of his Regular Army service, a well-deserved honour, recognising his efforts on behalf of the country and his soldiers.

I then reflected on the appointment of a private soldier with minimal service to the same rank, one Ruth Davidson. I am forced to ponder the justification for this elevation of a less than impressive politician, and am left wondering whose decision this was and just what criteria was applied in the making of the appointment.
