FIRST it was the ubiquitous cereal free gift that all but disappeared, due to the dangers of being swallowed by children. Now it seems the fast food free toy is about to follow suit ("Children’s meal toys axed to cut plastic", The Herald, September 19).

A mere two children started a campaign online to achieve this. Obviously in today's plastic-conscious world this has merits but what about all the other disappointed children? Even politicians are doing the same. Referendum results that "win" are being challenged. Does a majority mean anything now and where does this all stop?

Temple plea

ROBERT Burns looked forward to a time "when sense and worth o'er all the Earth" would prevail.

The City of Edinburgh bought Calton Hill from the Master of Balmerino in 1725. Originally part of the Crown Lands and one with Arthur's Seat and the Castle Rock, this triple volcanic complex stands at the heart of Scotland's capital city. If the Crown Commissioners are approached might they consider protecting Calton Hill by taking it back into the Crown Lands? The Centre Temple of the Old Royal High School is a copy of the Theseum at Athens. Would it be an act of sense and worth to build brutal commercial bedroom blocks behind the temple?

Marinegate?

THE elaborately designed gates of the reconstructed Port Glasgow shipyard owned by Ferguson Marine Engineering Limited embody the name “Ferguson Marine Ltd” which was the name of a company incorporated in 1991 under the previous ownership and which went into administration in 2014. Faux Pas or premonition?
