ALLAN C Steele's letter (November 28) mentioning Giffnock North AFC triggered a happy memory. The year Giffnock North won the amateur football league they celebrated by chartering a train from Glasgow Queen Street to Craigendoran and then on to the paddle steamer Jeanie Deans for a jazz cruise to the Kyles of Bute and back.

I was playing midships with the Jubilee Jazz Band and there was a modern jazz band playing aft. On the way back the evening turned chillier and people started putting on jumpers and jackets. I was sitting with my back about a foot from the funnel, and as others put on extra clothes I had to strip down to my shirt as I pounded the piano keys with the perspiration running down my face. Happy days.
