David Cameron has insisted he will stay on as Prime Minister whatever the outcome of the European Union referendum.

Cheers could be heard from the Tory back benches as Mr Cameron answered with an unequivocal "yes" when put on the spot at Prime Minister's Questions by Ukip's only MP, Conservative defector Douglas Carswell.

There has been speculation in some quarters over whether Mr Cameron would continue in his post if voters opted for a Brexit in the referendum on June 23.

Speaking during PMQs, Mr Carswell, MP for Clacton, asked: "If the British people vote to leave the European Union, will the Prime Minister remain in office to implement their decision?"

Mr Cameron replied: "Yes."
