BORIS Johnson will host a joint event at COP26 with Nicola Sturgeon on Tuesday – as the First Minister insisted she hopes the PM's leadership role at the summit will be “a roaring success”.

Alok Sharma, the UK Government’s president-designate of the climate conference, has previously said that the First Minster would play “an important role” in the summit.

Speaking at her COP26 briefing yesterday, Ms Sturgeon confirmed that “the Prime Minister and I will co-host an event on Tuesday as part of the world leaders’ summit”.

It is also likely that the First Minister could appear at an event in her role with the Under2 Coalition, which is scheduled to take place on November 11.

The event will “feature key coalition members” including Scotland and the other UK devolved nations, with an aim of “highlighting the ambition and actions” that regional governments are taking.

Ms Sturgeon has stressed that she will “try to use the role and influence I have” to ensure COP26 is a success.

She added: “The Scottish Government is the European co-chair of the Under2 Coalition which brings together state, regional, devolved governments.

“Collectively, we represent 2 billion people, almost, across the world. It’s estimated that around half of the emission reduction that is required depends on action like governments like ours. There’s a big role to play there.”

The First Minister warned “there’s lots of political differences” between the UK and Scottish governments, but insisted “over these next two weeks, we’ll be pulling in the same direction”.

She added: “The future of our planet is at stake over these next two weeks.

“I want them to succeed. I want the UK’s presidency of this COP to be a roaring success and I will be doing everything over the next couple of weeks to make sure that happens.”
