David Marshall The Cardiff City goalkeeper won his seventh cap as a result of Allan McGregor's injury and suspension.

Allowed an early corner to cross his six-yard box before handling well from Kevin De Bruyne and Axel Witsel. No chance with either of the goals and clattered post during double save from De Bruyne 6

Alan Hutton In limbo at club level with Aston Villa, at least until a loan to a Championship club can be arranged, the former Rangers full-back unsurprisingly looked rusty. Unusually, his direct adversary Nacir Chadli was quicker than he was 5

Russell Martin The Norwich centre-half is suddenly a mainstay of this Scotland team and was left spare at the back. No disgrace here even if there were a few errant passes from the back and the two centre-halves were left marking space at the first goal 6

Grant Hanley The typical package here, using his bulk as much as possible against Christian Benteke, and throwing his body bravely in the way of everything. Couple of dangerous passes flirted with disaster though and dived in rashly in the lead-up to Belgium's second goal 5

Steven Whittaker His errant touch presented the ball to Marouane Fellaini in the lead-up to the first goal, and three touches later the ball was in the net. Worked his way into the game in an attacking sense, but fired one daisycutter wide of the target 5

Scott Brown Plays much of his best stuff in a Scotland shirt and it was the same again here as he tore into Belgium's big-name players with relish. Almost brought the house down with a 25-yard drive that whistled wide but was lucky not to conceded a penalty with his lunge on Benteke 7

Charlie Mulgrew First holding midfield start was a further vote of confidence for a man Gordon Strachan discarded in a past life. Showed plenty of decent touches in what may be his best position but was nowhere to be seen when the first goal was swept in 6

James Forrest Back on the right flank where he impressed against England but had few chances to go at his man one-on-one. A few shots from distance but seemed to struggle more than most with his footing on the greasy surface, crashing to earth twice in promising positions 6

Shaun Maloney Desperate to add to his tally of one goal in 29 Scotland appearances and was unlucky not to do so with a lunging effort in the second half. Integral to Gordon Strachan's shape and made a superb intervention to defy De Bruyne 7

Robert Snodgrass Rather harsh booking early for jumping into Witsel perhaps caused him to spend the remainder of the first half diving to the ground. All the usual graft here but not his night and withdrawn early 5

Leigh Griffiths Wolverhampton striker was given the nod to start, presumably on the strength of his lone striker's performance in Croatia. Pretty much reprised that effort with an evening of vainly chasing lost causes against bigger, stronger players. 6

SUBSTITUTES

Ikechi Anya (for Snograss 59) Watford's exotically named product of Castlemilk made his Scotland bow just before the hour mark and didn't let anyone down. Lovely trickery and pace almost led to an equaliser for Maloney 6

Jordan Rhodes (for Griffiths 68) The Blackburn striker was given 20 minutes to audition for Kenny Miller's role. A few things didn't stick but he at least showed penalty-box instincts, sending an effort wide from a Brown delivery 4

Ross McCormack (for Forrest 86) The Leeds United man made his first Scotland appearance since August 2012 late on but did not have enough time to make an impact 3
