COMMONWEALTH GAMES lightweight gold medallist Charlie Flynn will make his professional debut against English opposition when he faces the vastly experienced journeyman Ibrar Riyaz, on the Morrison Promotions, Thistle Hotel Show, in nine days?? time.

29 year-old Riyaz has a reputation for being a cute mauler on the inside who is also exceptionally durable, having been stopped just three times in a staggering 73 professional outings, while the roughhouse from Reading was in action on two occasions in November.

Flynn??s manager, Alex Morrison, has no doubt that Riyaz will provide a testing introduction to the professional ranks for the 21 year-old.

??What we were looking for in Charlie??s first pro fight was an opponent who would pose him different challenges to that he had encountered in the Amateur game and in Riyaz I think we have done that,?? said Morrison.

The doyen of Scottish professional boxing continued: ??Riyaz is cute on the inside and likes to rough his opponents up and he is a fighter who will not be discouraged easily and over four three minute rounds I am sure he will pose Charlie some interesting problems.

??But this is the first step in the professional side of the sport for Charlie and it is vital that he is learning from the opening bell.??

Also featuring on a six fight card that includes British light-welterweight champion Willie Limond, will be Scottish featherweight champion Jon Slowey who badly needs a victory against tough South African Michael Ramabeletsa following the loss of his unbeaten record to Kris Hughes in a Celtic featherweight title fight in June.

Morrison said: ??Jon Slowey will be topping the bill in what is a vital fight for him. After losing to Kris Hughes, when he was on the fringes of the British title scene at nine stone, there is no way Jon can afford another set-back.

??Along with Willie Limond, we will also be featuring Stuart Burt, Scott Allan and Jamie McGuire, in a card that represents as good value as I have put on.??

Meanwhile the Morrison Promotions Show at the Rivals Gym, Wishaw, tomorrow night has been called off following a string of withdrawals.

Tickets at £90 (including five-course meal) and £50 (including buffet) are available from 0141 554 7777/0000.
