DUNDEE UNITED chairman Stephen Thompson has bid £2.5million to buy Australian football club Newcastle Jets.

Nathan Tinkler, the Jets owner, revealed to Fox Sports that a deal has almost been completed and he expected Thomson to take over in the near future.

"We've had an offer in for a couple of weeks from Dundee United, " he said. "That offer is well in excess of the debts of the club and I've asked the administrator to get that sale done and that will see everyone get paid. Then, I can move on."

In a statement, the Tannadice club said: "Dundee United is not involved in talks with the Newcastle Jets, this is a personal venture for the chairman as part of a consortium.

"Any involvement of Mr Thompson in this or any other venture is entirely his prerogative and the board, which he remains fully committed to, is focused purely on Dundee United FC delivering a positive end to the season and building for next season."

Newcastle Jets are in danger of going into administration. Last week they failed to pay staff and player wages on time for the third time in four months.
