GRANT SHELDON finished ahead of the Olympic bronze medallist Jonny Brownlee in coming 38th in the London leg of the World Triathlon Series in London yesterday, as Alistair Brownlee coasted to victory.

The 21-year-old had a strong swim leg but faltered badly on the bike and was unable to make up lost ground.

"I did some things well today and some not so well," said Sheldon, who finished in 52 minutes and 12 seconds. "But it was some fast racing nonetheless."

Jonny Brownlee was forced to change his wheel at the outset of the cycle stage and the 90-second a pit stop proved fatal to his hopes.

His brother Alistair, the Olympic champion, broke clear with less than two kilometres left to win in 50:39 with Spain's Fernando Alarza second.

The older Brownlee said: "I have raced here seven times now and it's been great. The Olympics were the highlight but it's always good to come back."

Gwen Jorgensen led a USA podium sweep in the women's race with Vicky Holland the best-placed Briton in fifth.
