HEATHER Watson has battled her way into the second round, beating the No 32 seed Caroline Garcia in a three-set thriller.
The British No 1 looked down and out after losing the first set on Monday, but recovered to win the second before poor light stopped play. The decider could have gone either way, but Watson edged it to go through 1-6, 6-3, 8-6.
Laura Robson lost 6-4, 6-4 to Evgeniya Rodina of Russia, but looked more like her old self on her return to major tournament action after a lengthy injury lay-off. In the men's singles, home hopes Kyle Edmund and Brydan Klein also lost their first-round matches, going down to Alexandr Dolgopolov and Andreas Seppi respectively.
Former champions Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are both safely over their first hurdles in straight sets. Federer beat Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia and Herzegovina, while Nadal defeated Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the 13th seed, had a tougher time of it against Luxembourg's Gilles Muller, but in the end made it through in five sets.
Petra Kvitova has made a solid start to her defence of the women's singles title, beating Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands 6-1, 6-0. Angelique Kerber, the No 13 seed from Germany, went a game better than the Czech champion, beating another German, Carina Witthoeft, 6-0, 6-0.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
