CONTRARY to popular belief, Poland aren't a one-man team. Forget for a moment about Robert Lewandowski. Here Aidan Ferguson provides the lowdown on six of the other threats who could destroy Scotland's Euro 2016 dream.
Maciej Rybus
Age: 26
Position: Midfield
Club: Terek (Russia)
The pacy left-sided midfielder who currently plays for FC Terek Grozny in the Russian first division can both score and create as he drifts in from the left flank. Could cause Alan Hutton a host of problems as he will look to link up with Lewandowski lurking in and around the box. Linked with a move to the Barclays Premier League with Leicester City and Sunderland this summer.
Arkadiusz Milik
Age: 21
Position: Striker
Club:Ajax (Netherlands)
Highly-rated young striker has been in great form for Poland during this campaign, with six goals in eight appearances, including the equaliser against Scotland in Warsaw. Currently playing for Ajax in the Dutch Eredivisie after a successful loan spell from Bayer Leverkusen in which he scored 11 goals in 21 appearances. Quick and an aerial threat, but an unused sub against Celtic in the Europa League recently.
Kamil Grosicki
Age: 27
Position: Wide Midfielder
Club: Rennes (France)
Sharp winger who can play on both sides of the park. Only four goals for his country, all of which have come against Gibraltar. Fairly experienced with 31 caps for his country, and now based in France, where he guided his Breton club to the French cup final last season.
Sebastian Mila
Age:33
Position: Midfield
Club: Lechia Gdansk (Poland)
Spurned a great chance late on to win the match against Scotland in Warsaw last year. but Mila has a wealth of experience with more than 375 appearances for ten clubs. Clever dribbler who is usually deployed in an attacking midfield role. Made his name with Slask Wroclaw, with whom he featured in a Europa League tie against Dundee United.
Jakub Blaszczykowski
Age: 29
Position: Midfield
Club: Fiorentina
Former captain and probably the second-most recognisable figure in the Poland squad behind Lewandowski, with whom he has a reportedly fractious relationship. A great crosser of the ball who Scotland cannot allow any time to, 'Kuba' Blaszczykowski moved to Serie A this season in order to get regular game time to bolster his claim for Euro 2016.
Krzysztof Maczynski
Age: 28
Position: Wide Midfielder
Club: Wisla Kraków (Poland)
Pounced on a Hutton mistake to slot in the opening goal between these two sides in Warsaw. Regular member of Adam Nawalka's side, with six appearances in this qualifying campaign already. Spent a season in Chinese football with Guizhou but now back closer to home at his first club, Wisla Krakow.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
